Personal Flotation Workgroup
Saving Lives at Sea: PFD & Lifejacket Workgroup
The PFD Work Group grew from an IFISH 5 session entitled “Changing Commercial Fishing Personal Flotation Use Behavior: What can we learn from efforts to address the most important safety technology adoption challenge of our time?” This workgroup organizes virtual meetings that take place quarterly and feature researchers, safety specialists and lifejacket/tech manufacturers dedicated to keeping fishermen afloat and getting them back on the boat or rescued depending on the circumstances. This section of the Innovation Hub features meeting recordings and other materials shared by the group. Anyone interested in learning more about this international group of commercial fishing safety researchers and/or joining the group should contact julie.sorensen@bassett.org.

Behavioral Health Workgroup
Building Resilience in One of The Most Dangerous Professions; Supporting Behavioral Health in Commercial Fishing Communities; Stronger Minds, Safer Seas
In response to the increasing struggles with PTSD and stress, fisheries occupational health and safety researchers realized that more should be done to support the fishing community in the area of behavioral health. While not necessarily seen as an occupational safety and health issue in past decades, the research community now sees the ties between work environments, work exposures and mental health. In response to the need for a coordinated and effective response to these challenges, the behavioral health workgroup was formed. Since this workgroup has been launched, collective meetings have offered an opportunity to share research, solutions, resources, and to help establish an international network of collaboration.
