The fisheries sector in India plays a significant role in the Indian economy and provide livelihood to millions of fisher folk. The Indian fisheries sector is set in a unique and diverse set of ecosystems. The Blue Revolution in India demonstrated importance of Fisheries and Aquaculture sector. To improve the quality of life and economic well-being of people in rural areas and to create more livelihood opportunities, a holistic approach has been adopted by the Government of India to meet Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Government of India is proactive for the development of fisheries and aquaculture sector. Government has a number of schemes like Prime Minister Matsya Sampada Yojana, Blue revolution Scheme, scheme, development of fishing villages, upgradation and creation of infrastructure such as fishing harbours & fish landing centres and more to ensure sustainable and responsible development. In the IFISH 5 there were few research papers presented with reference to India. It is reported that hazardous working conditions, strenuous labour, long work hours, and harsh weather are the most common hazards faced in traditional as well as commercial fishing operations. In the Indian context, there are studies reported about the fishers and workers in marine, inland and brackish water sector. In this proposed session on “Occupational hazards faced by fishers in the Indian fisheries and aquaculture sector”, we plan to present the research findings of the work done in the Indian context with reference to coastal states like Maharashtra, Kerala, Odisha and a work about the occupational hazards faced by Indian shrimp farm workers. The suggestions and policy recommendations required in this field are also envisaged to be presented. Details of papers which will be presented: Priyanka Mushkam will present on “Gender Differences in the Physical Attributes, Time Use Patterns and Workload of Fishers in Telangana.” Dr. Suhas Wasave will be presenting “Alternative Livelihood Opportunities for Fishermen.” Ms. Suchismita Prusty will present her Ph. D research finding “Success Story of Fisher Women Retailers SHGs in Odisha.” Mr. Shubam Soni will be presenting “Livelihood Opportunities for Workers Engaged in Fish Waste Management.” Mr. Rajiv Rathod will be presenting “Livelihood Opportunities for Shrimp Farm Workers.”Dr. Arpita Sharma will be presenting “Assessment of Time Use and Workload using the Gender Analysis Tool for Fisheries and Aquaculture.”
